Traumatic Brain Injury

The Atlanta Center for Disease Control and Prevention reports that almost 1.5 million cases of Traumatic Brain Injury occur annually, nationwide.  Around 50,000 of these brain injuries will be fatal according to the CDC; another 80,000 will cause permanent disabilities.

Currently, 5.5 million Americans, and their families, are coping with the aftermath of traumatic brain injury.  As these numbers skyrocket, experts are labeling Traumatic Brain Injury as a "silent epidemic."

What is a TBI?  Any injury to the human head can be serious.  However, Traumatic Brain Injury (“TBI”) happens when there is permanent, life-altering harm.  TBI occurs in a variety of circumstances, including:

  • Car Accidents
  • Construction Accidents
  • Truck Accidents
  • Bicycle Accidents
  • Slip-And-Fall Accidents
  • Trip-And-Fall Accidents
  • Rough Shaking Of a Baby’s Brain (Shaken Baby Syndrome)
  • Household Falls
  • Criminal Assaults
  • Pedestrian Accidents
  • Motorcycle Accidents (Particularly If The Rider Fails To Wear A Helmet).

A sudden hard blow to the head, or TBI, can render a victim mentally disabled, cause brain damage or will require mechanical life support to keep the victim alive. Unfortunately, many victims of traumatic brain injury do not survive.

You should suspect someone may have experienced a closed TBI if they are exhibiting:

  • Confusion
  • Memory Loss
  • Fatigue
  • Numbness
  • Clumsiness
  • Nausea
  • Dizziness
  • Headache

All TBIs have permanent, subtle results.  In addition to the obvious injuries - death, coma, paralysis – traumatic brain injuries cause mood swings and memory loss.  TBI victims are easily confused and frequently fatigued.  They also have learning disabilities they did not have before the injury.

If you or a loved one has suffered a traumatic brain injury, you may have legal remedies available to you. These can include medical expenses, long-term medical care and rehabilitation, lost wages, pain and suffering, and other covered losses.
