Burn Injuries

A burn injury is an injury to the skin caused by heat, cold, electricity, chemicals or radiation. The most common cause of a burn injury is a commercial or residential fire. Causes of burn injuries can also include scalding or excessively hot water, faulty electrical circuits, gas explosions, faulty boilers, chemical spills, car accidents and hot radiators or heat risers.

Burn injuries are categorized by degrees according to severity.

First-degree burns include symptoms of redness (erythema) white plaque and minor pain at the site of injury. These burns usually extend only into the upper level of the skin (epidermis).

Second-degree burns generally consist of blistering containing clear fluid and can be very painful, depending on the level of nerve involvement. Second-degree burns involve the superficial epidermis and may also involve the deep (reticular) dermis layer.

Third-degree burns involve an actual charring of the skin, and produce hard, leather-like scabs that has separated from the unaffected part of the body (eschars). Frequently, there is also purple fluid. Third-degree burns are extremely painful and usually result in permanent scarring and disfigurement.

Burn injuries are almost always caused by someone’s negligence. Determining the responsible party can be difficult.  This is why it is important to conduct a prompt and thorough investigation to discover the identity of the negligent party and preserve key pieces of physical evidence.
